Sharpening
Knives are picked up every Tuesday and returned every Thursday.
Saffron + Salt is proud to partner with Maritime Sharpening, a small home-based business that takes pride in offering professional sharpening services to the Greater Halifax Area.
Maritime Sharpening's owner, Ken, has honed his skills experimenting with different techniques and various types of stones and machines, either freehand sharpening or using guided systems. He has been a member and active participant of the Guild of Professional Sharpeners since 2021.
Each knife, blade or other cutting tool requires a different approach. Upon receiving your knife, he will conduct an assessment to bring your tool back to its original performance.
For more information, visit their website at maritimesharpening.com. Ken doesn't just sharpen blades; he revives their purpose and honours their history.
No registration is required for drop-off. Please bring your knives wrapped in a dish towel for safe transport.

FAQs
What do I need to bring with me to classes?
No need to bring anything other than a positive attitude! Be ready to learn and have fun while you're doing it.
How do I make payments for a class?
Our online booking system for classes will open in September, where you'll be able to book your spot and make your payment online.
What's the difference between a Demo and a Hands-On class?
With a DEMO class, the instructor does most of the work. They will explain what they are doing, while they are doing it. There will often be opportunities for the class participants to touch and feel the food at various points throughout the process, but the instructor is the one doing the work. Because participants are not working while they are listening and learning, this is a great approach for complex topics or dishes.
With a HANDS-ON class, the participants are doing most of the work. They will receive instruction, followed by time to produce the dish themselves.
The instructor will offer advice and guidance as they are completing the task.
With both class styles, participants will generally have the opportunity to touch, feel, and taste the food throughout the process.
What if I have allergies or special dietary requirements?
Our cooking studio is not allergen free, and regularly houses dairy, gluten, eggs and nuts.
If you are hoping to attend a workshop, we recommend reaching out beforehand to understand if we will be able to safely meet your needs.
We take your allergies seriously!
Do I need to register for knife sharpening services?
No need to register in advance. Just drop your knives off, we will take your contact information, and then contact you via your preferred method to let you know when your knives are ready.
What happens if I can't make it to a class?
If you’re unable to attend, you’re welcome to transfer your spot to a friend or family member.
Please email us their name and email address in advance so we can welcome them properly.
As our chefs order ingredients well in advance, all class bookings are non-refundable.
Why does the knife sharpening not happen on-site?
Our knife sharpener works from a fully equipped workshop with a wide range of specialized tools. This allows him to carefully assess each knife and use the most appropriate sharpening method for the best results.
Because each knife is sharpened with precision and care—never rushed—this process is done off-site to ensure the highest quality finish and longevity for your tools.
